VIT Vellore mess menu: mess types, caterers and sample menu

Asked by AskVellore EditorialPublished Reviewed · Vellore

1 answer

  1. VIT Vellore hostel students eat at caterer-run messes chosen by mess type. The official monthly menu is shared through the VIT hostel portal (VTOP) and on hostel notice boards — menus change each month and each caterer's menu is slightly different.

    Mess types

Students usually choose one of these when registering for a mess:

    • South Indian Veg
    • South Indian Non-Veg
    • North Indian Veg
    • North Indian Non-Veg
    • Special Mess (higher fee, wider menu)

Caterers are allotted to hostel blocks and are announced before each academic year (caterers students frequently mention include PR Caterers and Darling). Mess change is normally allowed only in the official change window.

    Typical menu (sample, not official)

Breakfast: idli / dosa / pongal / poori with sambar and chutney, bread with butter and jam, eggs (non-veg and special messes), cornflakes with milk, tea or coffee.

Lunch: rice, sambar, rasam, curd or buttermilk, a dry sabzi, chapati or phulka, papad, salad; chicken curry on some days in non-veg messes; biryani is commonly served on Sundays in special and non-veg messes.

Snacks: tea or coffee with a light snack such as samosa, bajji or biscuits.

Dinner: chapati or parotta, a curry, rice, rasam and a sweet or fruit on some days.

How to get the current menu

    1. Log in to VTOP and check the hostel / mess section.
    2. Check the menu displayed outside your mess.
    3. Ask your block's mess representative.

The sample menu above is based on student guides and student discussions, not an official VIT document (checked November 2026). AskVellore is not affiliated with VIT.
